Whether you're hopping between beach towns for the day or settling into life along the coast, the Costa del Sol's public transport network is genuinely good — and far cheaper than renting a car for every trip. This guide covers everything you need to know about the C1 train, the key bus routes connecting Torremolinos, Fuengirola, and Mijas, and the Consorcio card that makes it all a lot more affordable.
The C1 Cercanías line is the most useful piece of transport infrastructure on the Costa del Sol. It runs 31 kilometres along the western coastline from Málaga Centro-Alameda all the way to Fuengirola, stopping at 17 stations along the way — including Málaga Airport, Torremolinos, and Benalmádena.
Trains run every 20–30 minutes throughout the day, seven days a week.
This means you can realistically use the train for a night out in Málaga and get back to Torremolinos or Fuengirola without worrying about a taxi.

These prices apply to standard tickets purchased at the machine. If you're using a Consorcio card (more on that below), fares drop significantly.
Tickets are available from self-service machines at every station. The machines have an English-language option and accept both cash and card. No queuing at a counter required.
At Málaga Airport and other stations with barriers, you can also pay by tapping a contactless card — credit card, debit card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay — and the system calculates the correct zone-based fare automatically.
Important: if you pay by contactless you must tap out at your destination, even if there are no barriers. Look for the red tap readers on the platform or at the station exit and tap your card again before you leave. If you don't tap out, the system has no way of knowing where your journey ended and will charge you the maximum fare for that direction of travel.
The train is ideal for the main coastal strip, but buses reach places the train doesn't — including the inland village of Mijas. The intercity routes below are operated by Avanza under the CTMAM (Consorcio de Transporte Metropolitano del Área de Málaga) network, which means the Consorcio card works on them.
This route runs the length of the coast road between Torremolinos and Fuengirola, making 34 stops along the way.
The M-120 complements the C1 train — if you're travelling between the beach resorts rather than heading all the way into Málaga, the bus can be the more convenient option depending on where you're staying.
Mijas Pueblo — the whitewashed hilltop village above Fuengirola — isn't on the train line, so the M-121 bus is the most practical way to get there from the coast without a car.
Worth noting: service ends at around 19:40, so this is more of a daytime excursion option than an evening route.
Málaga Airport → City Centre (EMT Express Bus "A")
If you're arriving at Málaga Airport and heading into the city rather than the coast, the EMT Express Bus runs between Terminal 3 and central Málaga (including María Zambrano train station and Paseo del Parque) every 20–35 minutes from 07:00 to midnight. Fare is €4, payable by cash, card, or QR ticket via the EMT Málaga app. Journey time is approximately 25 minutes.
Málaga → Marbella
For trips further along the coast to Marbella, Avanza and Portillo operate around 15 buses daily. The journey takes approximately 45 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on service, with prices from around €8. The bus is often the easiest option for this route given there's no direct train to Marbella.
The Tarjeta Consorcio is a rechargeable contactless card that gives you a 50% discount on all public transport across the Málaga metropolitan area — buses, the C1 Cercanías train, and the Málaga Metro.
If you're staying for more than a few days and planning to use public transport regularly, this card pays for itself quickly.

The transfer discount is particularly useful: if you change between bus or train services within 60 minutes, your connecting journey only costs €0.33 rather than the standard fare.

Note: the card must be activated in person at a staffed point (not a machine) when you first get it. Recharging can be done at any of the above, including machines.
For airport arrivals heading to the coast: Take the C1 train. It's the fastest, cheapest option — tap in with a contactless card at the airport and tap out at your destination (look for the red readers on the platform even where there are no barriers). The correct fare is charged automatically.
For day trips around the coast: The C1 train is your best friend — fast, frequent, and air-conditioned. For Mijas Pueblo, switch to the M-121 bus from Torremolinos.
For getting to Marbella: The train doesn't run that far, so use the Avanza/Portillo bus from Málaga.
If you're staying more than three or four days: Buy a Consorcio card. The €1.50 card fee is the only upfront cost, and the savings add up immediately.
